Grand Mother’s Funck: Le "Funk Fédéral" Lives On

Grand Mother’s Funck has been around since the early ’90s. Some of the musicians have been with the band since 1992; others joined a little later. Singer Rich Fonje has been part of the band since 2002. You can really tell that this group has been playing together for more than thirty years.
They call their style “Le Funck Fédéral.” It’s a blend of funk, soul, jazz, Latin, and hip-hop. Their influences often come from the U.S., but Grand Mother’s Funck have long since made it their own. Since 1994, they’ve released more than 160 original songs across twelve studio albums.
As early as 1996, their second album, “Please Baby Please Baby Baby Baby Please,” made it onto the U.S. college charts. Later, Akil the MC from Jurassic 5 joined the band. He collaborated with them on “The Proud Egyptian” and subsequently toured with them for three years. In 2025, they released another joint album, “Who Am I.”
Even after all these years, the story isn’t over. “The Big Pie” reached number three on the Swiss album charts in 2020. By 2026, the band was already working on new music again.
The current lineup includes vocals, saxophone, guitar, keyboards and clavinet, bass, congas, and drums. Many of the members have known each other for decades. With this band, therefore, it’s less about who’s in the spotlight at any given moment. What matters is how naturally everything fits together.
For the Tastentage festival, Grand Mother’s Funck will also be performing at a venue that is anything but a typical concert hall: the Roffler metalworking shop. Amid the workbenches and machines, a band will take the stage that has been crafting its own funk sound for more than thirty years.
